It began with a subtle, ominous music with Rey (Daisy Ridley) venturing through either the ruins of a spacecraft or trying to find something while going unnoticed. It was very reminiscent of current Marvel movie trailer music in a dramatic, luring kind of way. Rey is already painted as a conflicted character as she is heard saying she is “no one”. She does not let this alluring guard down as she grimaces and battles anything that comes at her. Her counterpart, Finn, shows up as a distraught castaway from his team of Storm troopers. He seems insecure and lost without the familiar confines his training and gear gave him. He cries that he has nothing to fight for, which of course will only be temporary.
Of course it would not be an equal trailer without the inclusion of the bad guys. A creepy, deep voice that either is Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) or his villainous master Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) comes in claiming vengeance of some kind. A shot of a mangled Darth Vader mask looms and adds some inkling of motive. It is peculiar that they somehow retrieved his old helmet, and didn’t Luke eventually gossip that his father ended up saving him and redeeming himself? That is vital and this reinvigorated Dark Side should do their homework. Also, whoever was the voice over gave eerie Emperor Palpatine vibes.

The Millennium Falcon, as usual, had to make a stunning, dynamic display zooming around with fighter pilots and other ships attempting (in vain) to shoot it down. The pivotal moment came when Han Solo appeared, offering sage wisdom of the Jedi’s. This led to an inevitable cutaway of a metal hand caressing R2D2, which one can assume is the mysterious, lurking Luke Skywalker.
Amid all the destruction a team of Finn and Rey appear and already seem tough, unstoppable, but also highly impressionable. They will definitely have trouble deciding what side they are on and whether or not they will listen to the force. Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) made a brief appearance, which could mean he joins Finn and Rey on this perilous adventure.

In the end, Princess Leia (who is sporting a more mature hairdo) offers a haunting voice over of advice. She says, “the force is calling to you . . . just let it in.” We do not know who she was consoling, but one thing is for sure: Rey, Finn, or Poe will have to answer the call to prevent the Dark Side from reeking havoc once more. As a side note, thank you to the true OG, Obi-Wan Kenobi for keeping Jar Jar Binks out of sight and hopefully out of mind.
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18th.
