Top Ten Literary Friendships

Books teach us many things including what it takes to be a good friend and what good friendships look like. Here are some of the best friendships in literature that define squad goals.

1. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley (Harry Potter): The golden trio have been friends for seven years, and even when they fought they always managed to find a way to forgive each other and move on. They battled dementors, trolls, death eaters, and Lord Voldemort, and came out stronger in the end. They went to the ends of the earth to help protect each other and the wizarding world.

   

2. Athos, Porthos, Aramis and d’Artganan (The Three Musketeers): With a motto like “all for one and one for all” how could the these four not make the list. Fighting for their country, these four always stick together. While the original three musketeers have been fighting side by side for years, d’Artganan proves himself and the three welcome him showing that the quality of friendships is not just how long it has lasted.

   

3. Jo, Meg, Amy and Beth March (Little Women): Just being sisters does not guarantee friendship. While they fight and don’t always get along, they still love each other unconditionally. They support each other, and take care of each other when needed, exactly like any good friend would. These sisters show that sometimes the greatest friends are the ones you are born with.

   

4. Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer (The Adventures of Tom Sawyer): Opposites do attract, at least with these two they do. Huck and Tom are full of contrasts, but one thing they do share is how much they like each other. Where Huck is a rebel and unwilling to conform, Tom is a good kid with a big imagination. The best kind of friends are the ones who balance each other out, just like these two.

   

5. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson (Sherlock Holmes): Seventeen years of friendship means something has to be going well between these two. Watson seems to be one of the only people in the world that can handle Sherlock’s Type-A personality and while they might not always get along, they show that friends are the ones who stand by each other even when they get on each other’s nerves.

   

6. Frodo Baggins and Sam Gamgee (The Lord of the Rings): Going to quite literally the end of the world, these two have faced what seems like imminent death together. These two faced unbelievable challenges on their way. They show us that sometimes being a good friend means being there for them even when things are looking rough.

   

7. Tibby Rollins, Lena Kaligaris, Carmen Lowell, and Bridget Veerland (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants): These four girls went through some of the toughest years of their lives with each other. No matter what they were going through they knew that they had three other girls who were there for them and who loved them, even if they weren’t near each other. These four girls were what all girls growing up in the 2000’s wanted to have.

   

8. Lily Moscovitz and Mia Thermopolis (The Princess Diaries): Mia and Lily were never the popular girls, they never had a large group of friends but they had each other. When Mia suddenly became a princess she needed her best friend more than ever to keep her sane, and Lily was always there for her. The two are sarcastic and witty, and where Mia over-analyzes, Lily remains calm. These two show that true friendships are ones that last no matter how many fights they have, or what is thrown in their path.

   

9. Anne Shirley and Diana Barry (Anne of Green Gables): From the moment these two girls met they became friends. Anne and Diana share a romantic view on life and love and friendship. And while Anne is independent and imaginative Diana is ready to follow her anywhere. The two share an immense love for each other that can never be broken.

   

10. Charlotte and Wilbur (Charlotte’s Web): This childhood classic produced one of the best friendships in literature. An unlikely pair, a spider and a pig, somehow become close friends. The two have an unwavering loyalty towards each other. She never ceased to find ways of helping Wilbur, even as she was dying, and in return Wilbur never stopped protecting her family. These two show that even when a friend is lost, the love will never die.
