Disney's Tomorrowland Starts Production

Disney’s Tomorrowland has officially started production in Vancouver.  Director Brad Bird’s project has had an insanely large amount of attention due to the mystery surrounding the film.  In an official press release from Disney on August 26 the studio teased a little more about the story.

“Bound by a shared destiny, a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor jaded by disillusionment embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory as Tomorrowland.”

The cast is anchored by 2 time Oscar winner George Clooney who plays the former boy-genius inventor in the film.  He’s known as Hollywood’s most talented actor and has a big year ahead of him with his film The Monument’s Men still to be released.  This will probably help to add even more attention to his role here.  Hugh Laurie will play the main villain, most famous from Fox’s House M.D..  Britt Robertson, from this summer’s smash hit Under the Dome, is the female lead.  Child actors Raffey Cassidy and Thomas Robinson finish out the cast.  This is clearly a very talented cast that could become even stronger with the possible addition of Judy Greer.
Even more talented than the cast might be the crew.  The film’s director of photography is Claudio Miranda, perhaps most famous for his work on Life of Pi.  The production designers behind both of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek films are on board as well.  Jeffrey Kurland, who earned an Oscar nomination for his costume design on Bullets Over Broadway, is also attached. Academy Award winning editor Walter Murch is also on board.
Though writer Damon Lindelof has gotten a lot of flack for his writings on films such as Prometheus and Cowboys & Aliens, he is still a fantastic creative mind that should be credited with saving World War Z this year. Lindelof is also noted as being a key creative mind behind one of the greatest television shows of all time in LOST.
Director Brad Bird has only directed one other live-action film before this one, but it was 2011’s critical and financial hit: Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.  His films before that were The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, and Ratatouille.  With all four of his films being big hits, it is expected that this will follow suit.
The announcement of Britt Robertson was originally concerning, but after seeing her act on Under the Dome excitement ensued, as she is definitely an up-and-coming star.  With a J.J. Abrams-esque marketing plan and some of the best creative minds in Hollywood as a part of this project, it is reasonable to believe that this will be one of the most talked about films leading up to it’s release.
