CBS Monday nights are about to get a lot geekier – in a wonderful way, of course! The new drama starring Elyes Gabel as main character Walter O’Brien, Katharine McPhee as Paige Dineen–the mother of a nine-year-old genius, and Robert Patrick as Homeland Security Agent Cabe Gallo is a perfect combination of action and crime dramas, with hints of comedy and possibly even some romance.
Scorpion follows a group of high IQ geniuses that are sanctioned by Homeland Security to help solve crimes. The cast is rounded out by the “genius squad”: Jadyn Wong as Happy Quinn, a mechanical whiz, Ari Stidham as Sylvester Dodd, a statistics master, and Eddie Kaye Thomas as Toby Curtis, a behaviorist virtuoso.  The entire ensemble is absolutely lovable! Together this ensemble radiates with chemistry. Because each character has something different he or she is extremely talented at, it allows the series to show every aspect of what it takes to solve a mystery, crime, or murder.

The writing is good, and the action sequences are fun to watch, but what is truly impressive is the acting. Katharine McPhee shines in Scorpion. Although she has had no previous experience of playing a mother, McPhee pulls it off with ease. This is surely her best acting performance yet (and this is coming from a person who loved SMASH) Actor, Elyes Gabel will have you asking, “Who is this kid and where did he come from?!”  It is clear that his character is extremely complex and from the pilot the audience is only able to see a tiny bit of that complexity. Gabel truly brings so much depth to the character and it will be interesting to discover more of his backstory.
Scorpion has everything a TV viewer could want – action, adventure, crime fighting, great writing, chemistry, comedy, and of course lots and lots of brains!
Scorpion airs Mondays at 9pm on CBS.
