Eclipsed, a new play written by Danai Gurira of The Walking Dead fame, earned glowing reviews after its Public Theater premiere on October 14, and now it’s going to Broadway! And it continues to prove one thing: New York City’s Public Theater, one of the most prominent off-Broadway establishments, is on a roll.
Fun Home, which premiered at their theater, moved to Broadway, became a financial success and won a slew of Tony Awards (including Best Musical).
Hamilton, which premiered at their theater, moved to Broadway, became a financial and cultural phenomenon and is considered the frontrunner to pick up a slew of Tony Awards this coming year.
And now, Eclipsed is following in their footsteps, and everybody involved is undoubtedly rooting for the Public Theater pattern to continue.
The play, notable for its themes of diversity and correspondingly diverse cast, stars Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave) who will be making her Broadway debut when the play begins previews at the John Golden Theater on February 23, ahead of a March 6 opening.
Eclipsed will round out a brilliantly diverse year on Broadway: joining Eclipsed’ largely African-American cast will be the also-largely African-American cast of The Color Purple, which opens next month, the largely Asian-American cast of Allegiance, currently in previews, Spring Awakening, also in previews, which features a largely deaf and hearing-impaired cast and the aforementioned Hamilton, which features a cast of all races, creeds and colors.
It will also be the cherry on top of a phenomenal year for Nyong’o, who will also appear in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, already a massive money-maker in pre-sales alone, this holiday season.
And with the entire Public Theater run of Eclipsed already completely sold out, signs are pointing to the show’s Broadway transfer being just the three-peat that the entire team is hoping for.
