We all dream in gold.
That is what flashed across the screen, a sophisticated scrawl of impending hopes and dreams as the press anxiously chatted and mingled before the nominations. Then, directors Ang Lee and Guillermo del Toro revealed the first round of nominees, followed by actor John Krasinski and Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs.
Surprise: Star Wars

While it was a long shot it would be nominated in any of the major categories, Star Wars: The Force Awakens clenched two nods in the sound category, visual effects, film editing, and original score. I mean with John Williams, how can you not?
Surprise: The Press Itself

While some names garnered no applause or whispers, the press seemed to favor Mad Max: Fury Road and Sicario when they were announced for cinematography. Any other time Mad Max was mentioned, the room was abuzz and came alive with positive commentary.

Several media outlets (like Entertainment Weekly) predicted that Idris Elba would get a supporting actor nomination for Beasts of No Nation. He was left out of the line up that includes Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hardy, Sylvester Stallone, Christian Bale, and Mark Rylance.

In a gasp-inducing moment, Room director Lenny Abrahamson beat out Ridley Scott (The Martian) for the fifth spot of nominated directors.

The Washington Post and some other outlets did not have high hopes for biographical hip-hop drama, but a satisfactory shift came when its name rang out in the Original Screenplay and unfortunately the film’s name wasn’t called in the Best Picture category.

It seems Christian Bale is the only one carrying the torch for The Big Short, since his housing market posse were left in the dust.
Surprise: Jennifer Lawrence

No one can deny the magic and allure of J-Law, but the room of reporters seemed perturbed by her name being put in the Best Actress category. She did, after all, beat out Amy Schumer for the Golden Globe, so maybe we will see her win her second Oscar come February.
