Superheroes Rule: The CW Announces New Fall Lineup

The CW Upfronts kicked off this morning in NYC and with the event came a brand-new lineup for the network. With every night on The CW looking different than the previous TV season, the emphasis seems to be on The CW’s biggest selling point: superhero television shows.
One of the biggest additions to The CW’s primetime lineup is Supergirl. The critically acclaimed and fan loved TV show starring Melissa Benoist, Calista Flockhart, Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh and Jeremy Jordan will fly on over to the network after its first season aired on CBS. The CW places Supergirl in the Mondays at 8/7c timeslot, the same slot it filled on CBS. This means that a Greg Berlanti produced superhero TV show will air Monday through Thursday at 8/7c.
According to Entertainment Weekly, The CW president Mark Pedowitz revealed that he is thrilled to have Supergirl on The CW. He told reporters in a conference call that, “The fact it’s now moved to The CW, where it should have been in the first place, I don’t think it will have a big impact on the tone.” He continued by saying, “Just imagine what our superhero crossover episode is going to look like come December.”
One question that remains a little fuzzy in terms of Supergirl’s move to The CW is whether Flockhart will continue with the series. According to EW, part of Flockhart’s original deal was to work near her home in Los Angeles. With Supergirl flying to The CW, production has moved to Vancouver for season 2. Pedowitz spoke about Flockhart’s return saying “We’re in ongoing discussions… We’re thrilled that she wants to continue with the show and we’re happy to have her in [in whatever capacity] works out.”
Coming into its 12th season, Supernatural is on the move again. After holding the Wednesday 9/8c timeslot, Supernatural will make a new home Thursdays at 9/8c following DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Also on the move, the critically acclaimed series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend will move to Fridays at 9/8c after the network decided to keep Supergirl in the Monday timeslot. This means that The Vampire Diaries and The Originals will be broken up come the fall. The Vampire Diaries will remain on Fridays at 8/7c with The Originals being held until mid-season.
Joining The Originals at midseason are iZombie, Reign and The 100. Speaking specifically about The 100 according to several reporters, Pedowitz says that the decision to hold The 100 until midseason has nothing to do with the perceived “rocky season” or fan backlash the show experienced.
New shows joining The CW come the fall are No Tomorrow and Frequency. Archie Comics reimagining Riverdale will be held until midseason.
