Julia Ercolano ’20 / Emertainment Monthly Staff Writer
Fall is here and classes have started, but that doesn’t mean that summer reading streak needs to end. Readers everywhere are back at school, ready to face the next semester, but also dreading that start-of-school slump. But fear not! Here are five books (and one very special screenplay) being released this fall to help any reader stay on top of their game!
For the Fairytale Fanatic:
Expected Publication Date November 8, 2016
The author of The Lunar Chronicles—a series of fairy tale retellings with a science-fiction twist—now offers up a new perspective on the infamous Queen of Hearts. In Wonderland, Catherine is the reluctant object of the King of Heart’s desires. At a royal ball where the King is expected to propose, Cath meets Jest, the court joker, and is instantly pulled to him. To protect themselves from the wraths of Cath’s parents and the King, the two keep their relationship secret. But while Cath is determined to live her own life, fate may have something else in store.
For the Sci-Fi Enthusiast:
Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Expected Publication Date October 18, 2016
Aboard the Jump Station Heimdall, two new characters are next up to confront the BeiTech attack that started in Illuminae. Hanna and Nik come from two different worlds—she’s the station captain’s daughter, he belongs to a notorious crime family—but they both call the Heimdall home, and they have to save it. The situation escalates with alien invaders and a malfunctioning wormhole threatening the space-time continuum. But the best part? Instead of traditional prose, the story is told through a collection of video transcripts, classified files, instant messages, and diagrams, making for one awesome reading experience.
For the Thrill Seeker:
The Chemist by Stephenie Meyer
Expected Publication Date November 8, 2016
It’s finally here! The acclaimed author of the Twilight saga is back with an intense page-turner. An ex-agent for the U.S. government, Meyer’s new heroine boasts a unique skillset. On the run from her former employers—an unnamed, ultra-clandestine agency—the lead has to take one last job in an effort to get rid of the target on her back. But a new romance and unwanted feelings complicate her situation, and survival is looking less and less likely.
For the Hopeless Romantic:
Paris for One and Other Stories by JoJo Moyes
Expected Publication Date October 18, 2016
From the author who filled your heart to bursting in Me Before You, this collection of nine short stories promises to deliver more laughter and tears. Paris for One follows twenty-six-year-old Nell, who has traveled before. When she and her boyfriend plan a romantic weekend getaway to Paris and he doesn’t show, Nell finds herself alone in a strange city where she discovers a side of herself she never knew about. This tale of self-discovery is sure to be absolutely and utterly charming. In other words, a perfectly typical JoJo Moyes book.
For the Potterhead:
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay by J.K. Rowling
Expected Publication Date November 18, 2016
Come November 18, fans will be able to both watch and read J.K. Rowling’s screenwriting debut. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them follows the story of Newt Scamander, a Magizoologist intending for a brief stay in New York City when some of his fantastic beasts escape and his stopover turns into a longer trip. This highly anticipated addition to the Wizarding World is sure to bring back the nostalgia and wonder of Harry Potter’s original adventures.
For Everyone:
Small Great Things by Jodi Piccoult
Expected Publication Date October 11, 2016
An important book about race and privilege, Small Great Things is a must-read. Ruth Jefferson is an experienced labor and delivery nurse, but she’s not prepared for this. While performing a routine checkup, Ruth is reassigned to another patient because the newborn’s parents are white supremacists who don’t want Ruth, an African-American, touching their child. The hospital complies, but the next day Ruth is the only one in the nursery when the baby goes into cardiac distress. After hesitating to perform CPR, she finds herself in the courthouse being defended by Kennedy McQuarrie, a white public defender. As the case becomes a media sensation, Ruth struggles to maintain some sense of normalcy in her life, and she and Kennedy come to see the flaw in their perceptions of others—and of themselves.
With such an impressive line-up for the fall of 2016, that back-to-school slump doesn’t stand a chance!
