89th Academy Award Nominations
Julia Funk ’19 / Emertainment Monthly Staff Writer
After a tumultuous first couple of weeks of 2017, Hollywood and the rest of the world needs some positive news. Thankfully, early this Tuesday morning The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science revealed this year’s 89th Academy Award nominations.
For the first time in history, the Oscar nominations were not revealed at a news conference. Rather, a series of videos of past Academy Award winners announced the nominations and shared their experiences receiving an Oscar, which was live streamed on Oscar.go.com and other platforms. Actors such as Terrence Howard, Jennifer Hudson, Brie Larson, Jason Reitman, Gabourey Sidibe, and others announced the nominees.
Although these are only the nominations, everyone seems to be buzzing about one movie: La La Land. The Academy gave this neo-musical 14 nominations, holding the same record with the classic Titanic and All About Eve for the most nominations in Oscar history.
In recent years, #OscarsSoWhite has drawn attention to the lack of diversity among the nominees and within the Academy. However, this year there are several diverse nominees in all of the categories, such as several nominations for Moonlight, Fences, and Hidden Figures. So far, in this year’s award season, Moonlight has been this year’s most awarded film with 97 prizes this season. It will be a tight race, but overall 2016 was an excellent year for film.
