'The Legend of Korra' Recap/Review: "The Terror Within"

Fans of The Legend of Korra had only one episode to watch this past Friday, and the rest of the season will air online through various websites. In this episode, “The Terror Within,” we see Zaheer and his gang infiltrate Zaofu in an attempt to kidnap Korra, while also showcasing Mako and Bolin in their own separate moments to shine. It’s a great episode, with more of a lean on action and mystery, as opposed to the very character-driven episodes earlier this season.
The fight scene in this episode are action packed and really exciting to watch; you’re on the edge of your seat because you know that Korra’s safety is on the line. Seeing this criminal team fighting against so many benders at once is thrilling to see, and the level of synchronization between these fighters is a great element to see: with the power of the four elements between them, this team is a force to be reckoned with. What’s really great is that we still have little to no idea what these people want with Korra; all we know is that they think that the world would be better off without the Order of the White Lotus and the Avatar, and their plans may or may not have something to do with this mysterious guru Laghima that Zaheer keeps talking about. From the end of the episode, it’s clear that we’ll probably be getting some answers soon.
At the beginning of the episode, we see Opal, Su’s now-airbending daughter, depart for the Northern Air Temple, and the scene between her and Bolin before she leaves is both funny and adorable (“Until then, we’ll always have kale”). We have some Varrick in this episode, some Zhu Li, and even some Korra-metalbending action.
This episode also sees Lin and Su arguing over the Avatar’s safety, as Lin is furious that Zaheer and friends were able to get into Zaofu, despite Su’s claim that her city was the safest in the world. It shows that even though Lin is starting to forgive Su for past trespasses, when the Avatar is in danger, she’s back to the tough as nails police chief we all know and love. It’s great to see Mako further prove himself as a detective, and it’s great to see him piece the evidence together about how Zaheer and his friends infiltrated Zaofu; it’s another reason that this show is great for kids and older fans of the show: the kids can enjoy the bending battles, while older fans can appreciate the complexity and mystery behind the story.
Compared to earlier episodes in the season, “The Terror Within” is a different but equally great mixture of character development, action, story progression, and comedy that will keep fans guessing about what Korra and her friends will discover about the super criminals who seem determined to bring the Avatar down.
