New Super Smash Bros Part 3 – KO’s

Part three. In my opinion, this might be the saddest of all the articles I write about this game. Today, we pay our respects to the characters I think may not come back to Super Smash Bros. Now, again, this is not confirmed information from Nintendo, but rather what I see as the most likely possibilities. In fact, I’d rather not see any character go (especially a few of these guys) but these are the five characters I see as the most likely to leave. A lot of this is based on patterns I studied in the last few characters that were replaced from Melee, such as Young Link and Roy. And again I could be wrong about these guys, but I’m definitely not seeing a return trip.

Wolf

Wolf is a tricky one. Star Fox’s rival fits the villain category, but has a lot of things going against him. Technically, he’s a clone, and a third clone at that (see: Dr. Mario). He’s also only been in Brawl, and if Nintendo intends to include a new Star Fox character, four seems a bit excessive for a series whose most recent game was a remake. Unfortunately, the captain of the Star Wolf squadron may be forced to exit the battlefield after just one game.

Lucas

Lucas was the only character whom I predicted would leave not because of a pattern, but because of hard facts. His game never made it to North America, he’s the second character from a series that’s dying anyway, and he’s a pseudo-copy of Ness anyway. It’s sad but true, but Lucas will probably end up on the cutting room floor.

Ike

Poor Ike. Ike was the first and most obvious pattern I noticed when figuring out who might be taken out, and it’s sad to say the leader of the Greil Mercenaries has to go. So far, the Smash series has followed the pattern of including two Fire Emblem characters: Marth, and the protagonist from the most recent game. In Melee, it was Roy from Fire Emblem: Fuin no Tsurugi, then Ike from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, and finally, it’ll be the character from Fire Emblem: Awakening (more on that later). Unfortuantely, all roads lead to Ike’s removal.

Toon Link

This one is a bit more difficult to explain, but hear me out. Yes, there are reasons for Toon Link to stay, such as the rerelease of Wind Waker in HD. But another pattern emerges: the Zelda characters always feature Link and a Link copy. First it was Young Link, then Toon Link, and now it’ll be a new Link (again, more on that later). There’s just too small a chance for me to put him as a maybe, so sadly our cartoony friend must go.

Lucario

Lucario was always an odd choice to me, until I found out he was the last Pokemon designed by the creator of the original 151. Sadly, that still won’t save him from being knocked out of the arena permanently. He was sent in to replace Mewtwo as the more serious and dangerous Pokemon of the group. However, whether Mewtwo returns or a new Pokemon takes his place (once again, more on that later), Lucario probably won’t be making a return appearance.
