Starring: Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg, Bill Paxton, Paula Patton
Rating: R
Run Time: 109 minutes
This movie features Bobby Trench, Denzel Washington, and Michael ‘Stig’ Stigman, Mark Wahlberg, as DEA and a naval intelligence officer that try to infiltrate the cartel, but end up digging themselves into a deeper hole when it all doesn’t go according to plan. The trailer doesn’t really make it clear as to what is going on in this movie. The best I could decipher was that two guys are trying to get revenge on some mafia guy for taking a woman. I have yet to understand why the stars rob a bank in the beginning of the trailer if both work for the government. Between the dialogue and the content of the film, this movie seems like a pass. Even after reading some good reviews about the movie on rotten tomatoes, most writers still struggled to understand the plot fully and felt that it did not create characters that were even likable.

The Smurfs 2

Staring: Neil Patrick Harris, Katy Perry, Hank Azaria, Jayma Mays
Rating: PG
Run Time: 105 minutes
This comedic family movie is the sequel to The Smurfs movie. The smurfs in this movie must retrieve smurfette from Gargamel because she knows a spell that can reverse his newest evil achievement. This could be a great kids movie, but it lacks an overlying thematic element. In Dr. Seuss’ movies they contain a lesson or a deeper meaning that kids can understand. In The Smurfs franchise, it seems to bank more on the fact that this was once a popular cartoon. The plot is typical as far as children’s movies go. The good guys must defeat the bad guys, and the bad guys have no idea what they’re doing, which makes it impossible not to be able to defeat them. The Smurfs 2 doesn’t seem like the next best kids cartoon; this could be another weekend movie miss.

The Spectacular Now

The Spectacular Now

Starring: Shailene Woodley, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Miles Teller, Kyle Chandler
Rating: R
Run Time: 95 minutes
Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller star as two teenagers, one who is labeled the nice girl and the other a non-stop partier. Although this movie might only be a little over an hour and a half, it packs a punch. This movie focuses on bigger life questions than just partying and having fun like other movies that are out. A lot of people could relate to this film not just a specific age group. The writers from 500 Days of Summer worked on this film, which means the dialogue and plot will move forward with some great wit, and authenticity. Already the winner of the Special Jury Prize, the third most prestigious prize at the Sundance Film Festival, this movie is probably the best candidate for the weekend if you find yourself at the movie theatre.
