Emma Trujillo ‘20/ Emertainment Monthly Comic Book Staff Writer
Let’s take a look at this week’s easter eggs in the CW superhero line-up.
Spoilers for Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow through the four-night crossover, Heroes vs. Aliens.
Supergirl 2×08 “Medusa”
The Medusa virus is a Kryptonian created disease that kills all non-Kryptonians. This is similar to a device that, in the comics, was created by the Kryptonians to kill all non-Kryptonians. This device was called the Eradicator and was designed to keep the blood pure. On the TV show, Medusa is designed for warfare.Cyborg Superman appeared in the comics in 1990. He was created when Hank Henshaw, a NASA scientists got hit by a solar flare. The flare happened when Superman threw the aforementioned Eradicator into the sun. This sets Cyborg Superman against Superman in the comics.
Flash 3×08, Arrow 5×08, Legends of Tomorrow 2×08 “Invasion!”
When Barry goes to get Oliver and Diggle, he interprets them fighting Vigilante. He pulls bullets out from in front of Oliver in the same why that he stopped the boomerangs in the first crossover event.Kara lives on Earth-38. In the comics, Earth-38 is a world where time has progressed normally since Batman’s and Superman’s introductions in 1939 and 1938 respectively. As a result, on this Earth, the heroes have passed on and left their mantles to their descendants.
HR proposes an idea for STAR Labs becoming a museum. This is possibly a step toward the Flash Museum that has been seen on the show before.
The Star Labs warehouse’s exterior looks exactly like the Hall of Justice.
Supergirl is described as more powerful than a locomotive. The description was used in the Adventures of Superman TV, which ran from 1952 to 1958, to describe her cousin.
The newspaper from the future had been changed from being written by Iris West to being written by Julie Greer. Julie Greer is a news reporter who, in the comics, has covered Flash stories. She appeared in Flash #231 and Flash #238, starting in 2007.
Barry says to Kara that she was “not the first superhero to be mind controlled.” This calls back to the first CW crossover where Barry gets mind controlled and Oliver has to fight him.
The Arrow part opens up with Oliver running. This is how a handful of Arrow seasons have opened up in the past.
Laurel’s necklace has the Black Canary logo from the comic books on it.
The Queen mansion, seen intact in this episode is the same place used for the Luthor mansion in Smallville.
Thea gives Oliver the Hozen he gave her in the first episode.
It is said that Tommy is now a doctor in Chicago. This is a shout out to the actor, Colin Donnell’s role on Chicago Med. He couldn’t make the episode because of scheduling conflicts.
In Oliver’s dream world, he and his father are held up at gunpoint by a man in an alleyway. This is similar to the iconic Batman scene where his parents die. It references the fact that many early Arrow storylines come from Batman comics.
When Felicity can’t speak on the time ship she says, “darmok and jalad at tanagra.” This is a phrase used on Star Trek: Next Generation.
Felicity says, “this looks like a job for Supergirl.” This line references the commonly used phrase “this looks like a job for Superman.” It also harkens back to the line “this looks like a job for the both of us,” from Supergirl 2×01.
Ray Palmer turns to Felicity and remarks, “she really looks like my cousin,” about Supergirl. Brandon Routh, the actor who plays Ray, played Superman in the 2006 movie Superman Returns.
Supergirl also called Barry and Oliver “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.” The title has been reserved for The Avengers, while DC heroes have gotten the phrases, The Super Friends or The Holy Trinity. Kara calling Barry and Oliver Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is just throwing shade at The Avengers.
