The hit Hulu show Only Murders in the Building, starring Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short, finally came out, on June 28th, 2022, with a long awaited second season. In the first season, we follow the story of Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin), and Oliver (Martin Short), as they try to solve a murder that took place in their New York apartment building. We leave the season one finale with the cliffhanger of Mabel being arrested after being found with the dead landlord in her apartment.
Season two starts with the characters realizing they’re being framed for a murder they didn’t commit. After finding evidence in their apartments and items implicating a motive from each of them, they realize someone is deliberately trying to get them in serious trouble. With the help of recurring and new characters, they learn the secrets in the building they’ve lived in for years.
With these characters, comes the new information about the old apartment building that people have been living in for decades. Initially passed down from generation to generation of landlords, we find out the building is undergoing a management switch right before the old landlord, Bunny, was murdered at the cliffhanger of the season one finale. Through flashbacks, she reveals that there was more to the building than was let on in season one.
Although there are a few new cast members, most of the onscreen building dwellers are familiar faces to watchers. We can still enjoy Mabel’s sarcastic quips and Oliver’s outlandish antics, while watching them puzzle together the mystery they need to solve. We dive deeper into each of our favorite recurring characters so nothing feels stagnant or old. New supporting characters provide even more layers to the mystery, leaving you clueless to who the murderer is until the very last episode.
One thing that consistently stayed at 5-stars was the score for the series. Composer Siddhartha Khosla does an amazing job at getting us completely wrapped up in the onscreen mystery. In a dialogue-free episode eight of season one, we see the true power of his music. No one speaks a word throughout its entirety, and yet it still feels like nothing is missing. The catchy theme song and suspenseful tunes remain consistent throughout the second season as well.
Everyone should watch the second season of this show, and if you haven’t seen the first one, watch it as well. The show has non-stop red herrings, motives, murder, and sarcastic banter. It’s the perfect weekend binge-watch for any mystery suspense fan.
